Escort Requirements
Not every abnormal load needs an escort. Here is when one is legally required and when it is recommended.
Width Over 3.5 Metres
Loads wider than 3.5 metres require a private escort vehicle under the STGO regulations. The escort travels ahead to warn oncoming traffic of the width.
Length Over 18.65 Metres
Rigid loads exceeding 18.65 metres in length require an attendant escort vehicle. The escort assists with the movement through tight junctions and narrow sections.
Police-Directed Escort
For some loads, particularly those over 5 metres wide, the police may direct that an escort is required. We work with North Wales Police and other forces along the route to confirm requirements before departure.
Route Complexity
Even where not legally required, an escort is strongly recommended for routes with known hazards, tight junctions, low bridges or sections where the load will encroach into the opposing lane. We advise on this as part of the planning process.
Northern Ireland Specific
In Northern Ireland, loads between 3.66 metres and 4.3 metres wide require a haulier-supplied escort vehicle. We cover Northern Ireland and understand the PSNI notification requirements.
