01244 539300When Do You Need a Low Loader?
A low loader has a dropped deck that sits lower than a standard flatbed, which does two jobs at once. It keeps tall loads within height restrictions on the road, and it lets wheeled and tracked plant drive straight on via ramps rather than being craned. If you are moving excavators, telehandlers, dumpers or any self-propelled machinery, a low loader is almost always the right trailer. We also hire step frame trailers, known as step extenders, which extend from 13.6 metres to 19.6 metres for longer loads.
MLR Trailers is the trailer hire division of RN Roberts & Sons, the family-run North Wales haulage firm established in 1989. Our low loaders are STGO-rated with hydraulic ramps, and our step extenders reach 19.6 metres for longer loads. Collect from our North Wales yard, or ask us about delivery to your site for an additional charge.
What Our Low Loaders Carry
From tracked plant to structural steel, here is what our low loaders carry on hire.
Excavators & Tracked Plant
Tracked machinery drives straight up the hydraulic ramps onto the deck. The most common low loader job.
Telehandlers & Wheeled Plant
Self-propelled wheeled machinery loaded under its own power. No crane, no forklift needed.
Dumpers & Rollers
Compact plant and site machinery moved between yards, sites and hire depots.
Beams & Structural Steel
The step extender carries long structural items up to 19.6 metres, extending from a 13.6 metre deck.
Portable Buildings & Cabins
Site accommodation and modular units within the trailer's dimensions.
Anything Awkward
If it is heavy, tall or long, tell us the dimensions and weight and we will confirm whether it fits.

2.5m wide, both trailers
We hire two related trailers. The low loader is a 3-axle, 13.6 metre trailer with hydraulic loading ramps, STGO-rated with rear steer, on a fixed deck that does not extend, with a maximum load of 41,000kg. The step extender is a 3-axle trailer whose deck extends from 13.6 metres to 19.6 metres for longer loads such as beams and structural steel, also STGO-rated with rear steer. Both are 2.5 metres wide. Tell us what you are moving and we will confirm which trailer fits.
How Trailer Hire Works
A simple hire, start to finish. Tell us about the load and we'll get the right low loader ready.
Tell Us About the Load
Call or send an enquiry with what you're moving, when you need the low loader, and for how long. If a step extender suits the length better, we'll say so.
We Confirm Availability and Rate
We check the low loader is free for your dates and give you a clear hire rate up front, with no hidden charges.
Collect or Delivered, Then Returned
Collect from our North Wales yard, or we'll deliver to your site for a charge. Return it at the end of the hire, or we'll collect for a charge. We can extend if you need it longer.
What You Need to Hire a Trailer
Hiring a trailer is straightforward, but there are a few things you will need in place first.
Operator's Licence
A valid goods vehicle operator's licence covering the trailer. If the combined weight of your vehicle and the loaded trailer is over 3.5 tonnes, this is a legal requirement.
Your Own Insurance
Your own insurance covering the hired trailer. We will ask for a copy of your insurance certificate before the hire begins.
A Suitable Towing Vehicle
A vehicle suitable and rated to tow the trailer. The trailer's laden weight must be within your vehicle's towing and plating limits.
Planned Maintenance
Planned maintenance inspections can be handled by us or by you, whichever you prefer. Just let us know when you book.
If you are unsure whether you meet these requirements, call us and we will talk it through.
We Can Move It for You Instead
Hiring only makes sense if you have the tractor unit, the licence and the driver. If you would rather the load was simply moved, RN Roberts & Sons runs the same low loaders as a full transport service, with our own drivers, permits handled and the job done door to door. One family firm, whichever way suits you.

Yes. The hydraulic ramps at the rear let wheeled and tracked plant drive straight onto the deck. Static loads can be craned on.
The step extender is a separate trailer whose deck extends from 13.6 metres to 19.6 metres, suited to beams, structural steel and long fabrications. The low loader is a fixed 13.6 metre trailer and does not extend.
No, there is no minimum hire period. We hire for as long or short as you need.
If your load exceeds standard legal limits it may need STGO permits and notifications, which are the hirer's responsibility when you transport your own load. If you would rather we handled the whole move including permits, see our Low Loader Transport service.
