01244 539300When Do You Need a Flatbed?
A flatbed is an open platform trailer with no sides or roof, which means it loads from the top, sides or rear by crane or forklift from any angle. If you are moving steel, timber, packaged materials, containers or anything that does not need weather protection and cannot easily be loaded through a curtain, a flatbed is the most versatile trailer there is.
MLR Trailers is the trailer hire division of RN Roberts & Sons, the family-run North Wales haulage firm established in 1989. Our flatbeds are 13.6 metre open platforms with full crane and forklift access, plus a 10 metre urban option and an extendable trailer reaching 21 metres. Collect from our North Wales yard, or ask us about delivery to your site for an additional charge.
What Our Flatbeds Carry
From steel packs to long fabrications, here is what our flatbeds carry on hire.
Steel & Metals
Beams, sections and packs loaded by crane from any side, the classic flatbed load.
Timber & Building Materials
Packaged timber, blocks and bagged goods moved between merchants, yards and sites.
Containers
Shipping containers moved on the flatbed, with the extendable option for longer container work.
Machinery & Plant
Crane or forklift loaded items that do not need ramps to get onto the deck.
Palletised & Packaged Goods
Palletised freight and packaged goods that do not need weather protection.
Long & Awkward Loads
The extendable flatbed reaches 21 metres for the longest indivisible items.

We hire three flatbed trailers for different jobs. The standard flatbed is a 3-axle, 13.6 metre open platform, the workhorse for most loads. The urban flatbed is a shorter 10 metre trailer for tight sites, city deliveries and restricted yards. The extendable flatbed extends to 21 metres for the longest indivisible loads such as structural steel and long fabrications. All are 2.5 metres wide with full crane and forklift access from every side. Tell us your load and we will confirm which flatbed fits.
How Trailer Hire Works
Hiring a flatbed is straightforward. Tell us what you're loading and we'll have it ready.
Tell Us What You're Loading
Call or send an enquiry with the load, your dates, and how long you need the flatbed. We'll point you to the right deck if you're unsure.
We Confirm Availability and Rate
We check the flatbed is available for your dates and confirm a clear hire rate, with no hidden charges.
Collect or We Deliver
Collect from our North Wales yard, or we'll deliver for a charge. Return it when the job's done, or we'll collect for a charge, and we can extend the hire if you need longer.
What You Need to Hire a Trailer
Hiring a trailer is straightforward, but there are a few things you will need in place first.
Operator's Licence
A valid goods vehicle operator's licence covering the trailer. If the combined weight of your vehicle and the loaded trailer is over 3.5 tonnes, this is a legal requirement.
Your Own Insurance
Your own insurance covering the hired trailer. We will ask for a copy of your insurance certificate before the hire begins.
A Suitable Towing Vehicle
A vehicle suitable and rated to tow the trailer. The trailer's laden weight must be within your vehicle's towing and plating limits.
Planned Maintenance
Planned maintenance inspections can be handled by us or by you, whichever you prefer. Just let us know when you book.
If you are unsure whether you meet these requirements, call us and we will talk it through.
We Can Move It for You Instead
If you would rather the load was moved than hire the trailer, RN Roberts & Sons runs flatbed and curtainsider transport as a full service, our own drivers, loaded and delivered. See our General Haulage service.
